El personaje principal de la trilogía Marca de Nacimiento es Gaia Stone, una matrona de dieciséis años. ¿Por qué elegiste un personaje como ella? (The principal character of The Birthmarked Trilogy is Gaia Stone, a midwife who is sixteen years old. Why did you choose a character like her?)
Antes de que te responda Ángela, déjame decirte gracias por invitarme a Página tras Página. ¡Eres tan agradable por proponérmelo! Como quería a un personaje fuerte con importantes situaciones de alto riesgo y de vida o muerte, creé a Gaia, una jove matrona con geniales responsabilidades. Ella era valiente cuando plantaba cara a los problemas, pero también joven para ser increíblemente impulsiva algunas veces. (Before I answer, Ángela, let me say thank you for inviting me by Página tras Página. You’re so nice to have me! Since I wanted a strong character who was important in high-stakes, life-and-death situations, I made Gaia a young midwife with great responsibilities. She was brave when faced with major problems, but she was also young enough to be believably impulsive sometimes.)
En España, los únicos libros publicados son Marca de Nacimiento, Preciada y Prometidos, pero también has escrito Tortured (1.5) y Ruled (2.5), que son contados desde la perspectiva de Leon. ¿Cómo fue escribir desde este punto de vista? (In Spain, the only books published are Birthmarked, Prized and Promised, but you also wrote Tortured (1.5) and Ruled (2.5), which are told from Leon's perspective. But how was it to write about this viewpoint?)
Fue fascinante. Leon no es el personaje más afable, por lo que cuando estaba escribiendo desde su perspectiva, tenía la oportunidad de mostrar la diferencia entre sus sentimientos sinceros y y lo que él elegía decir, que siempre era menos. Escribir las historias también me dejaron desarrollar de una mejor forma las relaciones con Gaia y sus padres, lo que ayudó a escribir las novelas. (It was fascinating. Leon is not the most forthcoming character, so when I was writing from his perspective, I had a chance to show the difference between his honest feelings and what he chose to say, which was always less. Writing the stories also let me develop his relationships with Gaia and his parents more, which helped me as I was writing the novels.)
¿De dónde conseguiste la inspiración para escribir la trilogía Marca de Nacimiento? (Where did you get the inspiration for writing The Birthmarked Trilogy?)
Las ideas más tempranas para la novela las tuve mientras estaba de viaje con mi familia en los Estados Unidos. Los estados del sur tenían una grave sequía y los miles de campos secos me hicieron pensar en el cambio climático y en quién podría sobrevivir a ello. El resto de la historia evolucionó tras escribir el primer capítulo. (I had my earliest ideas for the novel while I was on a road trip with my family in the United States. The southern states were in a severe drought, and the miles of dry landscape made me think about climate change and who could survive it. The rest of the story evolved after I wrote the first chapter.)
Tu primer libro, Marca de Nacimiento, consiguió muchas buenas críticas. ¿Cómo te sentiste cuando las leístes? ¿Y cómo recibiste la noticia de que la trilogía iba a ser traducida en otros idiomas? (Your first book, Birthmarked, got a lot of good reviews. How did you feel when you read them? And how did you receive the news that the trilogy was going to be published in other languages?)
Estaba feliz de leer algunas de las primeras buenas críticas, por supuesto. Estuve infinitamente agradecida de que a algunos lectores les gustase la historia de Gaia. Cuando mi agente me contó que íbamos a vender los derechos extranjeros también, me sentí emocionada. Es España, la razón por la que mis libros fueran traducidos fue porque el blog Juvenil Romántica hizo campaña sobre ello. Los blogueros hace una verdadera diferencia. (I was happy to read some of the first good reviews, of course. I was beyond pleased to know that some readers enjoyed Gaia’s story. When my agent told me we were selling the foreign rights, too, I was thrilled. In Spain, the reason why my book was translated was because a blogger at Juvenil Romantica campaigned for it. Bloggers truly make a difference.)
El 16 de septiembre, tu nuevo libro, The Vault of Dreamers será lanzado. ¿Puedes adelantarnos algo? (On September 16, your new book, The Vault of Dreamers, will be released. Can you advance something about it?)
The Vault of Dreamers tiene lugar en un instituto de artes que también es un programa de televisión, y los estudiantes están obligados a dormir 12 horas cada noche para mejorar su creatividad. Una noche, Rosie Sinclair no toma su somnífero y descubre que el doctor del colegio cuida a una de las chicas durmiendo de una manera siniestra. Ella necesita entonces descubrir el por qué. Es una novela de ideas, sobre soñar y arte, y que se vuelve muy espeluznante. (The Vault of Dreamers takes place at an arts school that also doubles as a reality TV show, and the students are required to sleep for 12 hours each night to enhance their creativity. It’s a novel of ideas, about dreaming and art, and it gets pretty creepy.)
¿Tienes otro proyecto que te gustaría escribir o que estás escribiendo? (Do you have another project you would like to write or you are writing at the moment?)
Estoy trabajando en la secuela de The Vault of Dreamers y ya que es una trilogía, el proyecto debería mantenerme ocupada por un año más o menos. (I’m working on the sequel to The Vault of Dreamers, and since it’s a trilogy, the project should keep me busy for another year or so.)
Sobre ti, ¿qué escritores han influenciado más tu trabajo? (About yourself, which writers most influence your work?)
Estoy influenciada por lo que sea que esté leyendo en este momento porque me gusta aprender de diferentes novelas. Especialmente me han gustado últimamente The Kiss of Deception de Mary Pearson y Say What You Will de Cammie McGovern. (I’m influenced by whatever I’m reading at the moment because I like learning from different novels. I’ve especially enjoyed The Kiss of Deception by Mary Pearson and Say What You Will by Cammie McGovern lately.)
